If you have an emergency, you’re going to want to have all of the supplies you may need to get out of it safe within arm’s reach. This is what emergency kits are for! If you’d like a few tips to put one together for your home, Walker & Frick Construction DKI in Richmond has got what you need.

How to Put Together an Emergency Kit

Tips for Your Emergency Kit

  • First, make sure that you have a sufficiently large container where you can fit all of the items you may need. While you’re at it, ensure that it is water and fireproof.
  • Then, remember to keep it in a strategic spot where it can be easily accessed, but that won’t be within children’s reach.
  • It’s also a good idea to have more than one. You can have one in your car, one in your desk at the office, and one more in your home.
  • You should keep in mind that you should restock the items in your emergency kit as you use them up, so they’re available in an emergency.
  • Lastly, learn how to use the supplies in your emergency kit correctly. Read and follow the instructions to a t.

Items to Have in Your Emergency Kit

  • Water and snacks: keep bottled water and non-perishable protein snacks (like walnuts or almonds), so you can be nourished and hydrated in a disastrous situation.
  • Protective wear: you never know what you’ll have to endure in an emergency, so keep gloves, blankets, face masks, protective glasses and more for yourself and your family.
  • First aid kit: all of the medication and medical equipment you may need to treat injuries or ensure your family’s safety should be present in your emergency kit.
  • Valuable information: make sure to keep in your kit some information that can help you stay safe (e.g. a relative’s phone number, your insurer’s contact, and more).
  • Communication devices: it’s also a good idea to have a charged phone or radio (with extra batteries and their charges), near in case you need them.
  • Useful tools: flashlights, scissors, ice bags, safety pins, whistles, tapes, and other similar tools can be incredibly helpful in an emergency situation.
