During an emergency, the authorities could have you evacuate your home. It is important to know what to do during this situation and to be prepared. At Walker & Frick Construction DKI in Richmond, Virginia, we already informed you on protecting your pet during an emergency, so what about your valuable documents? Think about how much time and trouble will it take for  you to replace them?

Irreplaceable Documents

There are many documents that have sentimental or monetary value in your home. Making copies and having them sealed in ziploc bags in your emergency kit is a good idea. Storing the originals in a deposit box at the bank is the best way to keep your documents safe.

Documents to Include

In a waterproof container include copies of the following documents: medical records, wills, insurance policies (see below,) social security numbers, bank records, property deed, vehicle titles and drivers licence. Having these documents after an emergency can save you a lot of problems, especially if your home or business is damaged during the disaster.

Insurance

If a disaster occurs and your home is damaged, you will need proof of insurance to get it repaired immediately. If your bank is closed, has been blown away by the same disaster, or  if you have lost the key to your lock box, you will need to have these documents in an easy to retrieve place. Keeping copies of your insurance documents somewhere other than your home or bank is also recommended. Maybe at a relatives house in another county.
